Walter Junior "Cocklebur" Burnett
October 6, 1934 – December 27, 2015

Walter Junior Burnett, 81 of rural Lancaster, Missouri passed away at his home in rural Lancaster, Missouri on Sunday, December 27, 2015.

The son of Walter Scott and Clara Marie (Lyberger) Burnett, he was born in rural Glenwood, Missouri on October 6, 1934. He attended school in Glenwood and Lancaster, Missouri and helped his father on the farm. Walter served in the U.S. Army from June 1953 to May 1956. He completed basic and field artillery training at Fort Chaffe, Arkansas and Fort Still, Oklahoma. He was then stationed in Germany during the Korean War where he was assigned to the HQ, 593 Heavy Field Artillery. After service, he held various jobs in Schuyler County and then moved to Illinois and worked for Caterpillar in Montgomery, Illinois until his retirement. He then returned to Missouri where he was the pastor of the Community Christian Church of Downing, Missouri and part time in Baring, Missouri.

He is survived by his children, James Burnett and wife, Judy of Cottage Grove, Tennessee and Nancy Benninger and husband, Craig of Earlville, Illinois; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Burnett and wife, Lyndsay of McKensie, Tennessee, Steven Miller and wife, Jennifer of Earlville, Illinois and Stephanie Tucker and husband, Matt of Leland, Illinois; 5 great grandchildren, Joshua Burnett, Logan Burnett, McKaela Hoaglund, McKenzie Hoaglund and Jessica Miller; 1 sister, Mary Philby of Moulton, Iowa; nieces, nephews and cousins; mother of his children, Wynona Burnett of Lancaster, Missouri; 1 sister-in-law, Nora Lou Toney of Glenwood, Missouri; other family members and many special friends, including Daisy Gray of Lancaster, Missouri.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, John Jacobs; 1 brother, William Burnett; 1 niece, Pat Dorsey; 2 brothers-in-law, Emmett Philby and Kenny Toney.

Walter was a member of the VFW, UAW Local 145, Glenwood Masonic Lodge #427, American Legion in Queen City, Missouri, Schuyler County Ministerial Alliance and volunteered at numerous other places.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Schuyler County Church of Faith in Lancaster, Missouri with Pastor Sonny Smyser assisted by Pastor Ben Wheeler officiating. Music will be special CD selections of "Amazing Grace" and "Precious Memories". Pallbearers will be Norman Garr, Keith Toney, Matthew Burnett, Randall Ayer, Fred Lanham and Steven Miller. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. one hour prior to the services. Memorials have been established for the Schuyler County Nutrition Site. Burial and military rites will be in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, Missouri. Online condolences may be expressed to the family by logging on to normanfh.com.
