Helen Arty (Grother) Shanks, 96 of Henderson, Nevada formerly of Lancaster, Missouri passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Henderson, Nevada.

The daughter of Joseph and Emma Grother, she was born on July 18, 1920 in the state of Iowa. On April 13, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa, she was united in marriage to Vernon Judson Shanks and to this union 3 children were born, Sharon, Sandra and Gary.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Lanning of Henderson, Nevada; one son, Gary Shanks and wife, Pam of North Las Vegas, Nevada; one sister, Betty Boyd of Glenwood, Missouri; 8 grandchildren, Kevin and Todd Hall of Henderson, Nevada, Dwayne Harris of Lancaster, Missouri, Sherry Antal of Lancaster, Missouri, Brenden Harris and wife, Kelli of Glenwood, Missouri, Dawn Thompson and husband, David of Columbia, Missouri, Kimberly Kennedy of Renton, Washington and Jeff Coake of Lake Elsinore, California; nine great grandchildren, Adam Hall of Lake Havasu, Arizona, Klasandria Lathrop and husband, Vinnie of Ottumwa, Iowa, Christopher Tyler Hansen of Lancaster, Missouri, Brenton Hall of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Aurora, Robert Ian and Anatasia Harris of Glenwood, Missouri, Savanah and Logan Thompson of Columbia, Missouri; three great great grandchildren, Oliver, Luna and Molly Lathrop and other family members.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 1 daughter, Sandra Kay Harris on February 10, 2008; one grandson, Michael Harris who was three months old; three brothers, Clifford Grother and wife, Mary, Lorne Grother and wife, Gloria and John Grother and wife, Evelyn; three sisters, Elizabeth Grother, who was two years old, Ida Minor and husband, John and Lillian Reasoner and husband, Gene and one son-in-law, Richard Lanning of Henderson, Nevada.

Helen spent ten years of her life cooking for Claremont Colligant School in Claremont, California. She also cooked for various nursing homes in California. She worked a few years at Target. When she left Target, she ran the family bookstore until it was sold. She moved to Glenwood, Missouri to be near her sister and was an assistant to Robin McCullar at the Glenwood Christian School for several years. She lived for her kids and grandkids and never saw enough of them and never had a bad thing to say about any of them.

While in Missouri, she attended the Assembly of God Church in Glenwood, Missouri.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri with Robin McCullar, Pastor of the Glenwood Assembly of God Church officiating. Music will be provided by Robin McCullar, pianist and Roberta McCullar soloist. Musical selections will be "What A Day" and "In The Garden". Pallbearers will be David Thompson, Kevin Hall, Brenden Harris, Dwayne Harris, Jeremy Ferdig and Charlie Ferdig. Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Hall and Johnnie McCullar. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 one hour prior to the funeral services at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri. Memorials have been established for Assembly of God Church in Glenwood, Missouri. Online condolences may be expressed to the family by logging on to normanfh.com. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood, Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, Missouri.
