Hazel Mildred Alley
January 17, 1921 – June 1, 2015
Hazel Mildred Alley, 94 of Downing, Missouri passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.
Born one of three children to the parents of Kenneth and Dorsa (Fusselman) Pope, she was born on January 17, 1921 in Youngston, Missouri. After she was born, her family moved to Kansas City in 1929 then moved to Lee's Summit in 1931. She was a graduate of the Lee's Summit High School and was also a graduate of the Kansas City Business School. On May 20, 1940, she married her high school sweetheart, James Russell Alley and shared their lives together for 66 years. To this union 3 sons were born, James Russell, Jr, Ronald and Robert.
Survivors include her sons, Ronald Alley of Downing, Missouri and Robert Alley of Warsaw, Missouri; 1 grandson, Todd Eric Alley of Lee's Summit, Missouri and 8 step grandchildren she considered her own and welcomed them in her home; 1 great granddaughter, Haili Alley of Lee's Summit, Missouri; nieces and nephews; cousins and other family members.
Hazel is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Russell Alley on September 2, 2006; 1 son in infancy, James Russell Alley, Jr.; 1 brother, Lyle Pope and 1 sister, Verna O'Banion.
Hazel was a very active member and Sunday School Teacher of the Lee Summit Christian Church. She was also a typesetter for the Lee Summit Journal for 26 years. Hazel loved to fish and bowl in her spare time, was a Boy Scout Den Leader for a number of years, helped to organize the Student Council at the Lee Summit High School and was also very active in the Lee Summit PTA.
In 1992, Hazel and Russell moved to Downing, Missouri to live. Her eyesight started failing and was totally blind in 2002.
