Elmer "Sonny" Burgin McElhinney

December 19, 1939 – May 19, 2023

Elmer "Sonny" Burgin McElhinney, 83 of rural Queen City, Missouri passed away at his home on Friday, May 19, 2023.

The son of Elmer Monroe and Susan Violet (Burgin) McElhinney, he was born on December 19, 1939 in rural Queen City, Missouri.  He was a graduate of the Queen City High School in Queen City, Missouri.  On May 20, 1960 in Wyaconda, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Judy Swinderman and to this union two children were born, Ron and Ronda.

Survivors include his wife, Judy McElhinney of Unionville, Missouri; his children, Ron McElhinney and wife, Lori of Lancaster, Missouri and Ronda Probasco and friend, Jeff Ballanger of Moulton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Lucas McElhinney and wife, Haley of Lancaster, Missouri, Whitney Rigdon and husband, Ethan of Lancaster, Missouri, David Probasco of Moulton, Iowa and Haley Probasco of Moulton, Iowa; eight great grandchildren, Brenton, Sophie and Chayton Thomas, Drake Macomber, Brantlee and Brinklee McElhinney, Oakley Rockhold, Ryder Rigdon and baby girl Rigdon on the way; two sisters, Mildred Kiser and husband, Wendel of Kirksville, Missouri and Joyce Hill and husband, Richard of Unionville, Missouri; nieces and nephews and other family members.

Elmer is preceded in death by his parents.

Elmer worked for the N & W Railroad for twenty-nine years and filled many job titles with that company.  He was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Kirksville, Missouri.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jimtown Cemetery southwest of Glenwood, Missouri with Sonny Smyser assisted by Mikel Roberts officiating.  A recorded selection of "In The Garden" will be performed by Donna Shoop.  Pallbearers will be Lucas McElhinney, David Probasco, Ethan Rigdon, Jason Hill, Steve Shoop and Caden Hill.  Honorary pallbearers will be Ronald Picolet, Bill Shoop, Marion Macomber and Ben Wheeler.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the graveside services at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri.  Memorials have been established for the Jimtown Cemetery.  Online condolences may be expressed to the family by logging on to normanfh.com.  Burial will be in the Jimtown Cemetery, southwest of Glenwood, Missouri.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, Missouri.
