Chedrick Scott Hurley
May 12, 1970-November 6, 2026
Chedrick Scott Hurley, age 56, passed away November 6 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, loyalty, laughter, and fierce love for his family and the Milan C-2 School district. Born on May 12, 1970 to Larry and Mary Joyce (Martin) Hurley, Ched lived a life defined by mentorship, love of the outdoors, being the ultimate girl dad, and most amazing grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Doyle and Dixie (McKinley) Hurley, maternal grandparents Ralph and Marguerite (Aeschliman) Martin, as well as his mother, Joyce (Martin) Hurley.
Ched leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory, including his wife of 32 years, Traci (Mothersbaugh) Hurley of Trenton, Missouri; his children, Scotlin Hurley of Trenton, Missouri, McKinley Hurley (Aaron Young) of Trenton, Missouri, Mykah Hurley (Alex Harbin) of Quincy, Illinois; his beloved grandchildren, Fisher Young, Tucker Young, Piper Young, Bentlee Thomas, Kovey Young, and Banks Thomas; father, Larry Hurley; sister, Kristin Miller (Andrew); and brother, Rhett Hurley. He is also survived by his nephew and hunting buddy Mason Hurley (Melissa), along with many other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
After working for several years in farming and the private sector, Ched went back to school and completed his teaching degree. He then went on to dedicate his professional life to impacting others as a special education teacher, coach, and administrator. Coaching was one of his greatest callings, and through the years, he touched the lives of countless athletes who continue to look up to him both on and off the court or field.
His impact on youth sports extended far beyond the school walls. Ched was instrumental in adding a 10-and-under team to the Putnam County Raiders organization, and he started the Club 460 softball team based out of Trenton, Missouri.
When he wasn’t in a classroom or on a court or field, he could often be found where he felt most at peace: in nature. He loved all things hunting and fishing and looked forward to hunting seasons spent with family and friends while tracking the elusive "big buck,” which always seemed to be just across the river or narrowly over the Missouri-Iowa line.
Above all else, Ched was immensely proud to be a father to his three daughters. As the ultimate "girl dad," he wholeheartedly embraced every aspect of raising girls. He (mostly) cheerfully endured countless road trips listening to softball chants or tween movies on loop through the car speakers and took in stride the endless debates over “shared” clothing and makeup. As a lover of all things sports and father of girls, he naturally stepped into the role of a girls’ athletic coach.
Ched’s competitive spirit, fierce dedication to those he loved, patience, and calming influence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
